More than a half million Houstonians fish and hunt, and as many or more enjoy other pastimes
in the great outdoors ... like camping or sailing, birding or backpacking, kayaking or hiking. To learn more about everything that makes Houston the center of the outdoor universe, turn to Doug Pike and Inside the Outdoors, 6-8 a.m. Saturdays on The Sports Animal.
Running a close second to the outdoors on Doug’s short list of passions is golf. He’s no pro, and he doesn’t pretend to be one, but he knows the game well and plays every chance he gets. To get the latest information on local courses, new equipment, amateur golf and the professional tours, check out Tee to Green, 8-9 a.m. Saturdays.
Doug is a native Houstonian whose interest in the outdoors was apparent from the time he could crawl – and often did, right out the door and into the yard. Since then, he has fished and hunted throughout North America and America, the Caribbean ... even as far away as Sweden. But his roots are right here in Texas.
During his 20-plus years as an outdoors writer and broadcaster, Doug has won more than 100 awards from state and national associations for his writing, broadcasting, photography and editing. His enthusiasm for the outdoors and golf is contagious – catch it Saturday mornings on The Sports Animal.

Every Saturday morning on "Tee to Green," Doug Pike challenges the beverage cart attendants at The Oaks and Panther Trails in The Woodlands to pick which player will finish highest at that week's PGA Tour event. Each player can be picked only once during the season, and points are awarded per $1,000 earned by each team's selection. First choice always goes to the side that trails.
At stake overall, concluding with the Walt Disney Classic in November: If Doug wins the challenge, the cart attendants will caddy for a foursome of golfers including Doug and three Sports Animal listeners. If the women finish on top, Pike climbs into the beverage cart one morning to help fill the tip jar.
